Why Jurassic Park Rules at More Than Just the Box Office

Like video games, most casino slots have a shelf life. After a while, players will get a little bored and move on to the next best thing. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, such as games that have a timeless quality, or games with which you keep on discovering something new. Jurassic Park, a video slot released by Microgaming in 2014, falls into the latter category.

At the time of its release, Microgaming CEO Roger Raatgever called it, “one of our greatest slot creations to date.” It seems that, four years later, casino game players are obliged to agree with him. The point of Jurassic Park is that the concept is so far removed from the ‘fruit machine’ slots of the past that it is better to compare it with a video game.

3D slot games becoming widely available

The main game is standard enough fare, although some of the 3D effects are quite cool. The main draws are the 243 paylines, meaning every possible three plus symbol combination pays as long it runs left tor right across the screen. At any time during the main game, a T-Rex Alert can appear, causing the reels to be pumped full of Wild Symbols for five or six spins.

However, the real fun and potentially most lucrative part of the game begins when three Amber Scatter Symbols appear on the reels and award the Free Games feature. Most online slots have one Free Games/Spins award; Jurassic Park has five: Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, Triceratops, Brachiosaurus and Dilophosaurus.

T-Rex star of the show

All five Free Games features could be described as exciting, but, just like in the original movie, Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor Free Games steal the show. The former offers 12 free spins, during which T-Rex can appear at any time turning 1-4 reels wild. Couple this with the fact that the T-Rex pay symbols are stacked (cover several positions) on the reels and you can really rack up the big wins.

The Velociraptor Free Games feature works in a similar fashion: Stacked Velociraptor pay symbols on the reels, with 12 free spins awarded. In this feature, two velociraptors can appear during any one of the spins. A ‘fight’ will ensue (remember the slot is 3D), eventually turning one symbol into a special Wild Symbol. This symbol will do one of two things: Split in two, which can award unique six of a kind payouts, or apply a six times multiplier to the win. Once again, it’s potentially lucrative, possibly paying thousands of times your original bet.

Jurassic World also looks a like hit

Microgaming released a Jurassic World slot to tie in with the reboot of the movie franchise. It’s also getting decent reviews, although it’s only been available for just over a year, so it’s not quite clear if it will match the original for longevity. There doesn’t seem to be any plans to release a slot for the Fallen Kingdom – possibly a good thing given the lukewarm reception to the movie.
