Top 10 Geeks to Follow on Twitter (That You Aren’t Already)

Twitter is better than Facebook because your Grandma isn’t on there. It’s better than Instagram because there are no pictures of twee flower crowns and no pictures of someone else’s food. Plus, all your favorite geeks, like Neil GaimanWill Wheaton, and GRRM are on Twitter engaging with the little people. Which is awesome. If you’re the type to scoff at any and all social media because you can interact just fine in person (grumpy old man waving fist), then you might just pass this post right on by and hit up the True Detective Finale recap– because you need that recap to know what in the ever loving hell was going on this season.

If you’re already on Twitter and you’re the geeky type, then you don’t need me to tell you about guys on there like Nathan Fillion. So let’s talk about the geeks on Twitter that you might not be following but you really really should.

For the Science Geeks

Scott Kelly is a retired astronaut who was selected a few years ago to go on a special year-long mission to the International Space Station. His mission began a few months ago, so he’s up there in space doing his thang, and he uses his Twitter account to keep people updated. He also tweets gorgeous pictures of our home planet from the space station. His Twitter feed is social media at its finest

Bill Nye. Bill Friggin Nye, ya’ll. He’s on Twitter and he tweets amazing things and I love him. Ok? Now that we have that out of the way, Bill Nye is our favorite, lovable scientist from our childhood. He educates the world on things like global warming and other weird science stuff.

For the Music Geek

Music geeks are fanboys/girls too. They study every single detail of things just like the rest of us. If you’ve ever had a conversation with a true music geek, then you know what I’m talking about. Even if you’re not a music geek, you need to follow Bad Record Covers. You need this Twitter account in your life so you can see gems like this:

To balance out the horrifying album covers, you really should follow RockNRoll pics on Twitter. They have tons of cool pictures of rock stars that you’ve never seen before.

For the Regular Old Geek

You kind of like all of it, don’t you? You still have long boxes stacked up against the wall in your bedroom at your mom’s house, you may or may not have a Star Wars toy collection in your closet, and you worship Neil deGrasse Tyson. You’re the geek everyman (or woman). Well don’t worry, I’ve got you covered too. Chris Hardwick. You know him from Singled Out on MTV. Too young for that? Ok, well you also know him from Talking Dead. If you’ve never heard of that then I don’t know how to help you. He’s such a fanboy. I love it. You’ll love it.

What kind of list is this if it doesn’t have at least one Harry Potter parody account? All of them are great, but this one is a must: The Dark Lord.

For the Comic Book Geek

There are seriously a gazillion comic book Twitter feeds to follow. From the illustrators, to the authors, to the critics. Everyone associated with Marvel, Image, etc., is on there. Twitter is a hotbed for the comic book nerd, so I’m just going to randomly pluck a few out of the air for you to follow.

J.M. DeMatteis is one of my favorites. He’s so earnest and polite to his fans on Twitter. He wrote one of my all-time favorite comic books, Moonshadow. It’s the one that drew me into comics. He also wrote for Justice League of America and Justice League International and a ton of other stuff. Follow him. He’s nice and smart and you won’t regret it.

If you like both comics and laughing, I’m going to suggest you follow Matt Fritchman. Run! Go do it now! He has hilarious commentary and is also an amazing illustrator for comics like Hawkeye and Uncanny X-Men. You knew that already, didn’t you? Nerd.

For the GAMERS!

This list is feeling really short right about now. Full disclosure, I asked a gamer friend for help with this since the last thing I am is an authority on gaming. I quit playing video games after the Super Nintendo. Pathetic, right? First up is Peter Molydeux, a parody account of the legendary British video game designer, Peter Molyneux. Also, Cheap Ass Gamer tweets out all the best video game deals around. That one is a must.

There you have it. I know I left out the lady geeks, anime fans, and some others here. I implore all of you geeks who are feeling slighted to leave your favorite twitter accounts in the comments section or on whatever social media channel you saw this post, ok? We aren’t complete without you.
