Obesity Continues to Impact U.S.

Obesity is a serious problem impacting the United States. We’ve all been told, “An apple a day keeps a doctor away” and other catchy sayings to encourage healthier lifestyles. However, more and more adults run the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain strains of cancer due to unhealthy diets. Unless you regularly exercise, regulate portions, and lessen the amount of fats and processed foods you intake, your fate is sealed. There are ways to reverse these effects: fitness. Before I provide resources, it would behoove you to check out these eye opening statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • More than one-third of U.S. adults (34.9%) are obese.
  • Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
  • The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. \
