How to Market to the Geeky Audience When Dropshipping

With Geek Pride Day rapidly approaching (it’s May 25th in case you didn’t know), now is a great time to start thinking about this segment of your customers and how you can better market to them. How you can get them to love your business with the same gusto that they love Star Wars films or books by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

You may be asking yourself why this even matters. Why is this demographic so important to win over when trying to grow your business? There’s a couple of reasons, actually.

Why You Should Market to Geeks

As Felipe Contreras explains in his blog, unlike the rest of the population, geeks will actually listen to what you have to say. They want the details. They want to know as much as you’re willing to share about the products you sell and the way you do business. No amount of information is too much for the geek-minded individual.

Better yet, if you can convince a geek that your products and/or customer service are the best, or at least very high quality, they’re more than willing to share that information with others. This makes them a huge brand ambassador for your company, offering you valuable advertising at absolutely no cost.

How to Market to Geeks

Though every business is going to be slightly different in its approach, there are a few things you can do to gain the attention of the geeky audience when it comes dropshipping specifically. Here are a few options to consider.

  • Be Detailed. Remember, geeks like details so the more information you can provide, the better. In addition to offering top-notch product specs, be detailed with regard to your delivery and return processes and procedures. Help them understand the dropshipping process so they know exactly what to expect and how it benefits them.
  •  Create Curiosity. Though it helps to be detailed, you also want to create a little curiosity to keep the geek intrigued. You can do this by using titles and headlines designed to make them want to know more. This is especially easy if you have a blog on your site, where you can create articles like “3 Surprising Facts About…” or “5 Things You Didn’t Know About…”
  • Inspire Passion. Geeks are like any other demographic in that they have varying passions and tastes. But when they find something they’re passionate about, they go all in. Help incite that level of passion for your products by being passionate yourself. Get them excited about your business and products so they’ll geek-out on them too.
  • Be Accepting. Sadly, some geeks are bullied today or made to feel less than for the way they engage with the world. That’s why being accepting can make your dropshipping business more appealing. The more you can make them feel like a welcome part of the family, the more likely it is they’ll want to do business with you.

Create a Geek-Based Marketing Strategy

If you’re like a lot of business owners, you now notice that geeks have been missing from your marketing efforts. Therefore, one of the first things you can do to better command their attention is to create marketing strategies using these four approaches. Marketing strategies designed to appeal to them specifically based on their typical attitudes and traits.

When posting on social media, for instance, think about what type of posts would appeal to them most. And when choosing marketing channels, consider which ones they’re likely to respond to best.

Keep this demographic in mind when making your marketing decisions because a geek can easily become your best customer yet.
