Disney CEO: “We’re Working on Star Wars Stand-Alone Movies”

It seems that Disney is thinking of another way to cash in the popularity of Star Wars: character movies that aren’t part of the trilogy are currently in the works.

How would you feel right now if I told you that character movies about Yoda or even about Lando Calrissian are currently in the works? Would you fall over your seat? Well, then, start falling now, my geeky friend! Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger had this to say about the controversial franchise:

There has been speculation about some standalone films that have been in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few stand-alone films.

Take a look at young Anakin Skywalker as portrayed by Jake Lloyd.

What does this mean then? Basically, screenwriters Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are currently busy as they’re working on producing the scripts for these Star Wars character movies. Really think about this – separate stand-alone movies means that we’ll get to see more character exposure!

I think it’s already implied that these films won’t be following the chronological stream of franchise movies in the series: the screenwriters are free to choose a specific time period of their liking. In addition, with regards to the confirmed Episodes VII, VIII and IX that will be released between 2015 and 2021, we are given a clue that these Star Wars character movies will be released in the same period as well.

How different are these Star Wars character movies from the saga ones?

They are very different in the sense that these character movies are stand-alone – they will not be part of the saga at all, so if you’re not a true blue Star Wars fan, you will not have too much trouble with regards to understanding the flow of the story.

Rather than contributing to the overall plot of the saga, these Star Wars character movies will focus on the main character’s biography instead. Think of these in terms of Marvel: each character movie will be all about one main character while each Star Wars Episode movie will be about the combination of all the main characters. Are Thor, Iron Man and Captain America popping into your minds right now?

It’s about time that Disney started working on these Star Wars stand-alone movies, don’t you think? After all, they bought Lucasfilm, the official Star Wars maker, last year for a whopping $4 billion.

A Yoda Star Wars movie? Why not?

Various sources cite the statement of Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News with regards to the upcoming first Star Wars character movie. According to his report:

At this stage specifics are sparse, but [Lucasfilm chief] Kathleen Kennedy is putting together a Star Wars slate. I’m wildly curious for more details on the YODA film – would this be a young or old YODA tale?

Naturally, we here at Geek Insider are intensely curious about the details of the upcoming Star Wars Yoda movie as well. After all, Yoda has lived for about 900 years. A lot could have happened in 900 years. Hey, if our screenwriters are creative enough, a new Yoda trilogy can even happen.

Which character movie are you interested in? How about a Jar Jar Binks movie?

What IS it with the JJ Binks already?!

Maybe I need to go back and revisit the second three movies known as episodes 1 2 3 (get it?) again and see if he annoys me THIS time. I don’t expect him to.

There’s certainly a case to be made for his defence vis-a-vis the Ewoks – now, THEY were annoying. Too much Spielberg influence, if you ask me (when he’s good, he’s good but…) Anyway, live and let live, eh?
