Netflix Has Cast ‘Mad Men’ Actress Kiernan Shipka in ‘Sabrina’ Remake

Anyone who watched Mad Men will be happy with this brilliant casting choice. Kiernan Shipka is a phenomenal actress who definitely has the chops to play the iconic teenage witch. She also has some horror experience on her resume with the supernatural psychological horror film, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, in which she plays a Catholic boarding school student who is left alone at the school with a few other students when their parents fail to pick them up for winter break.

Riverdale showrunner and Archie Horror comic writer had this to say about the casting decision: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.” The show was originally set to air on the CW (like Riverdale) but it was announced that Netflix picked it up as a 20-episode, two season order early last month.

The source material for the show is going to be based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so this is shaping up to be a much different take on the story than the twee TGIF hit starring Melissa Joan Hart in the late 90s, early 2000s. Netflix tells us this will be about “an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch … just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.”

The show is still untitled and doesn’t have an air date either but we will keep you posted with any updates.
