Pre-Superhero Life

James howlett, wolverine, logan, marvel

Wolverine was born James Howlett, the second son of wealthy landowners John and Elizabeth Howlett in Alberta, Canada during the late 19th century. He was of poor health and neglected by his mother, but spent his early years on the estate grounds with playmates Rose and Dog, who was the son of the abusive groundskeeper Thomas Logan. As they reached young adulthood, Dog made unwanted advances on Rose and James reported him to his father, resulting in the family being expelled from the estate. Thomas Logan invaded the estate and attempted to take Elizabeth (perhaps his former lover) with him, before shooting John. James had just entered the room and his mutation manifested for the first time; his claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders, killing Thomas Logan and scarring Dog’s face. Elizabeth killed herself, then James and Rose escaped.

Gaining Powers

In the following years, James assumed the name of ‘Logan’ to hide his identity and his mutant powers developed. Mining work was undertaken and a love triangle ensued with the foreman Smitty, before Dog hunted Logan down and a fight broke out. Logan was ready to deliver the final blow, but Rose got in the way and he killed her by accident. He fled into the woods where he lived in self-imposed exile with a pack of wolves.

Allies

After the Second World War, Logan was taken by a group of scientists (led by Dr. Cornelius) as part of the Weapon X programme. Cornelius was hired to perfect a technique that would bond adamantium, an indestructible element, to human bone cells. Logan’s skeleton was bonded to it successfully. During his work with Alpha Fight, Canada’s government-run super team, he was approached by Professor Charles Xavier who required help with his X-Men. He stayed with the group, namely for falling in love with Jean Grey-Summers, also known as Marvel Girl.

Arch Enemies

While with the X-Men, he encountered enemies in Proteus, Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Reavers, the Brood, demons from Limbo, the Marauders, the Morlocks, and Dracula.
