June brings to my doorstep tales of fairies, enchanted sleeping children, magical jewels, and family secrets. Nothing is more exciting than coming home from a stressful day at work to find two novels handpicked for me and waiting at my door. Ready for some magical adventure? Take a look:

The Darkest Part of the Forest

This New York Times bestseller by Holly Black follows the epic adventure of a young woman named Hazel. Hazel and her brother, Ben, live in a place called Fairfold where humans live alongside with the Folk. These two siblings have entertained themselves since they were children with stories about a boy lying asleep in a glass coffin, that he is a prince and they are his knights. They grow up and grow past this fantasy, knowing that this boy will never wake up – until, of course, he does.

“Down a path worn into the woods, past a stream and a hollowed-out log full of pill bugs and termites, was a glass coffin. It rested right on the ground, and in it slept a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives.”

Newt’s Emerald

This charming Regency Romance (subgenre of romance novels set during the period of the British Regency (1811–1820) or early 19th century) by Garth Nix centers around Lady Truthful – aka Newt – who inherits her family’s treasure: The Newington Emerald. This Emerald is unlike any other: heart-shaped and dazzling, it bestows its wearer with amazing magical powers. Then, one night, it disappears. Newt is determined to find it. Restricted by the societal standards of that era, Newt decides that dressing as a man (moustache and all!) is the only way to go. Gaining an ally in the handsome Major Harnett, the two are swept away in a whirlwind of danger, subterfuge, and their newfound emerging feelings.

“Truthful leaned forward eagerly, before deliberately slowing herself. Taking a little half breath, half gasp, he carefully untied the gold drawstring of the small velvet bag. That successfully done, she reached inside and pulled out… the Emerald.”
