Halloween Costumes for the Geeky Fashionista

It’s that time of year again where the ghouls, the goblins, witches, and wizards come out to play. It’s getting colder and even the leaves are in the halloween mood, changing colors from green to reds and oranges. It’s that time of year where, even as an adult, we ask ourselves “What am I going to be for halloween?”

Don’t try to deny it, you know it’s true. I know it’s true. Even now I’m thinking about my halloween costume. What am I going to be? Who am I going to be? Am I going to make it or buy it? There are so many decisions to make when it comes to a costume. There are so many opportunities, diy or not. And if you’re anything like me you probably want to pick something very geeky from a movie or book.

Let’s take a look back at some of the top hits for geeky halloween costumes in the past:

Hermione Granger

The smart, strong female character in the Harry Potter series. Hermione was the heroine for all young girls who taught us being smart was more important than be pretty, and friendship was the most important thing of all. Her costume is fairly easy to pull together, save the Hogwarts badge. Unless, of course, you were the lucky one among us Muggles who actually got to go to Hogwarts.

Princess Leia

She’s might be my favorite character of all the Star Wars movies, probably because of her hair. I’m always so jealous of people who have enough hair to put into buns like that. WHO has that much hair?

Wonder Woman

She’s the pioneer of all female super heroes in the media. The one we look to the most for inspiration. The woman among every man. No wonder she was such a popular character to dress up as.

Now that we’ve gone through the past, the question that remains is what will it be for this year? We might still see the usual Princess Leia and Wonder Woman, but we have had a few phenomenons over the last couple of years that have created new, great female characters for us to enjoy. My speculations for top hits this year, and hopefully will give you some inspiration for your own costumes, are below. I have also included the websites for the diy projects. Hopefully it will spark the creative candle in you!

She goes by many names

Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons. It’s no surprise she would be one of the top characters to create a costume after. She’s one of the strongest female leads I have ever seen. It would be an honor to be the Mother of Dragons for Halloween. Here is the link to a blog where you can learn to make your own Khaleesi costume!

She is the Mockingjay

Katniss Everdeen became one of my absolute favorite female book characters of all time. Don’t ask me why, I’m not even too sure myself. Maybe it was the bow and arrow set, maybe it was she, like myself, never wanted to be the center of attention, maybe it was because I really wish I could put my hair in a braid. In any case, she’s is one of my favorite characters to dress up as. Here is a link to help in creating a costume just like hers!

She is Black Widow

One of the most interesting marvel characters out there, Natasha Romanova, will take no shit. She’s such a strong female lead that I’d be more than excited to wear her uniform. It’s a shame they haven’t made a feature film about her character. Here’s a link where you can find costume ideas for Black Widow.
