‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Is Under Scrutiny for the Casting of Johnny Depp

J.K. Rowling and her filmaking crew are stirring up controversy amongst Potterdom fans for casting Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Though the domestic abuse case with his ex-wife was settled over a year ago, the Pirates of the Caribbean star is certainly not in the clear. Fans are especially questioning Rowling, knowing her own past experiences with abuse. Though very restricted on what she could say in order to protect the privacy of Depp and his ex-wife, she has done her best to address her fans concerns. Here’s an excerpt:

“For me personally, the inability to speak openly to fans about this issue has been difficult, frustrating and at times painful. However, the agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected.  Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.”

Not having the whole story certainly makes it difficult to come to terms with Depp landing the major role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 2. (After all, the title is centered around his role…) For the sake of preserving such a wonderful series, hopefully fans can come to trust that Rowling and her crew would not overlook unforgivable offenses to keep an undeniably talented actor. Understandably, this may not be possible for all.
