If going off the definition of a Cult Film, as given by David Church a researcher and writer for Cineaste Magazine, “A cult film has a select but eccentrically devoted audience who engage in repeated screenings, celebratory rituals, and/or ironic reading strategies … Cult films are often strange, offbeat, or supposedly “transgressive” in content, in addition to sometimes being (intentionally or not) aberrant or challenging in form. In short, cult films are primarily perceived as “different” from “mainstream” films, and this sense of difference often reflects a resistance to mass-market consumerism, highfalutin artistic elitism, and political correctness.” With this definition the following movies are must see cult films, some of which might have been heard and obsessed over before and some not as much.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog
This is an amazing cult film, hilarious, and wonderful with the amazing Neil Patrick Harris as our main character and Villain (sort of). The description we get from Netflix.com says this about this cult film, “When he’s not busy breaking the law or trying to get close to his secret crush, Penny, supervillain wannabe Dr. Horrible boasts about his exploits via his Internet video blog and dreams of defeating his nemesis, Captain Hammer.” An interesting premesis made even better by the fact that Harris’ character randomly breaks out into song and dance through out, when every day life still seems to go on around him. Well worth the watch.
Super is another hilariously stupid real life super hero movie, where our main character gets fed up with life taking advantage of him and decides he will do something about it, become a super hero. Though in real life this is not always the best think to do. The Netflix description, “When his wife (Liv Tyler) falls in league with a drug dealer, average guy Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson) dons the guise of a superhero, dubs himself the Crimson Bolt and tries to keep a tagalong comic-book store clerk (Ellen Page) from becoming his sidekick. But it’s hard to be a superhero when all you’ve got to work with is a pipe wrench. Kevin Bacon co-stars in this action-driven dramedy from writer-director James Gunn.” If this awkward super hero movie doesn’t seem up to par check out these two others, Dakota Skye an indie superhero movie that is very interesting considering her super power is that she can never be lied to—she always knows what was meant to be said or what the truth was or check out Alter Egos another silly super hero movie along similar lines as Super.
A classic cult flim for over a decade this movie is available for direct streaming through Netflix. The description provided states, “Danny Boyle’s explosive 1996 film tracks the misadventures of young men (played by a cast that includes Ewan MacGregor, Robert Carlyle and Jon Lee Miller) trying to find their way out of joblessness, aimless relationships and drug addiction. Some are successful, while others are hopelessly not. Based on Irvine Walsh’s novel, Trainspotting melds grit with poetry, resulting in a film of harsh truths and stunning grace.” A classic that is always well worth the watch.
A cult film for all those SciFi geeks out there. A great story of the future and how technology has only been used for the few and not to the best of all the public. River a super genius has been turned into a killing machine though she doesn’t want to be. Netflix has this to say about this film, “Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the ship Serenity, picks up two fugitives from the powerful coalition ruling the universe. Mal and his mates find themselves at the center of a cosmic conflict, pursued by military forces and space-roaming savages.” A good movie regardless of being a SciFi geek or not.
For all those book geeks out there H.P. Lovecrafts classic short story turned classic cult film is what to watch. “Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, this campy send-up follows a medical student who develops a serum that miraculously revives the dead. With his roommate and his girlfriend, he reanimates a corpse — but he doesn’t factor in certain complications.” A connection for all those who love cult flims based on classic novels (like Trainspotting) and short stories; a good watch for everyone who loves classic cult films.
Though there are many, many more cult films available from Netflix through direct streaming and mail these are a few that are well worth the time spent to see. If non of these tickle the imagination try, Clerks, Hellboy, Curse of the Puppet Master, or any of the other Cult Movies found here.
