A Death Star by 2016?
It was only a few weeks ago that petitions were making the news because certain states wanted to secede from the US. In most circles, many paid no attention, and wrote off the petitioners as ‘sore losers’, who simply couldn’t accept Obama’s second term.
But, a petition that was created on November 14, not only deserves our full attention, it also needs Geeks everywhere to sign on the dotted line. Americans are petitioning the White House to construct a “Death Star”, and they want it by 2016, in order to “Strengthen our national defence”.
The “Death Star” as most of you already know, is from the “Star Wars” movies and resembles a small moon – but, ‘it’s no moon’. It’s more like a ‘moon base’ that belongs to the Galactic Empire; and just happens to be a weapon of mass destruction capable of taking out small planets. At the time of this posting, the petition had gathered a little over 1,000 signatures. By December 14, if a total of 25,000 signatures are gathered, a White House official will actually be forced to give serious consideration to the possibility of building one.
The petition reads:
“Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016. By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering [and] space exploration.”
Some bloggers have already begun to estimate the costs of the Death Star project and unfortunately the idea doesn’t look very promising. According to an article in Forbes magazine, the economics blog of students of Lehigh University, say it would cost $852,000,000,000,000,000 to get started, and that’s only for the cost of steel.
